Great Throwers Don't Pivot

The amount of confusion in this comment section is unbearable.  If you read Idris’s article and are confused by what he means, let me try to help out.  If we want to learn from Idris's advice we have to imagine a very young player: that kid who catches the disc, puts his head down, turns into a turtle, and just starts maniacally faking and pumping the disc every which way.  I believe Idris wants us to chill out, stand up, look at the field and act deliberately.  Idris wants us to understand that great throwers have a plan.

Great throwers will:
  • Stick with one teammate as they determine whether or not they can get it there
  • Throw without moving either foot
  • Take a single strong (“power”) pivot to get past their mark
  • Shimmy one way and pivot the other way
  • Step out to throw a huck
  • Take a large (explosive) pivot one way – with the intent of throwing – and hold it because the defense covered it, so they pull out and go the other way

Great throwers do not:
  • Pivot around like a maniac, desperately trying to find something open
  • Just start pump faking away
  • Take a large pivot one way – without the intent of throwing – and hold it, because they felt like “faking”
  • Hammer fake and then hide the disc behind their back hoping the mark won’t notice
